Image as metaphor
Many clients look at making art as an added bonus but they are never pushed to do art if they don't want to.
Some people can be hesitant to make art while others will jump right in. And there are those who take time to warm up to the idea, altogether.
Some draw a stick figures. And here's the thing, its not about how the image looks, it's about the process of (art) making. Images (just as language) are avenues that work to externalize feelings and they represent metaphors for what's going on in life.

Making your own meaning
In session, I will invite you to work in the medium that feels most comfortable to you, only after we have discussed your level of interest and your level comfort with this specific type of therapy.
Working in collage helps with comfort, initially. Colors and shape help express "feelings," while using materials, such as, pastels, paint, and clay. We will work collaboratively to figure out what is best for you.
We begin with talk therapy to ease into the "art" (when art therapy is chosen) and this will help to determine your readiness and desire. Together, we establish an environment to where you can explore your feelings through art and talk therapy. You will discover feelings from the images and will be encouraged to make your own meanings, along the way.

art is familiar
There is something very familiar about picture making.
As children, it was one of our earliest forms of expression. Do you have a memory of the smell of crayons, construction paper, or perhaps a certain type of paint or clay? Before you had the words, you had the pictures. My guess is that you still have the pictures, but now you have much more vocabulary to help you make your own meaning. |
